It would be easy enough to arrange so that you 'push' the little dog the first time, and if the very next move you persist in trying to occupy the same space, you 'hit' him. Some variation of this will probably be necessary to account for the dog moving when you take a swing at him. -- Ron Christian (Watkins-Johnson Co. Re not hitting your dog: I've modified the 'f' and 'F' commands to never attack a monster that you know about -- that is, not invisible or hidden. So, if you customarily use 'f' and 'F' (or control-move like I do), you will never attack your dog (or the nymph ...).
