[You hit yourself----More] A lot of people have been questioning how one could find out about some of the nice features in hack without reading the source code. Some have even suggested that my former posting was impossible, since Elbereth and Orcrist could not be found out otherwise. This is far from the truth. After reading the fortune on Elbereth, combined with a curiosity of the use of engraving, I tried it out, having nothing to lose. It worked. Orcrist was something I didn't discover, but that someone else here did, I played about 55 games before winning, he has played over 200 so far. I am pretty sure he didn't check the source, but probably just found a useful fortune. Also, I am not the type of person who refrains from accepting hints, blind to whether they were originally source-inspired. I read all of net.games.hack, and certainly see nothing wrong with users teaming up to gain a greater knowledge pool. Mithrandir jak@talcott.{UUCP,ARPA}

I am curious how many different things you engraved with before engraving with a wand of fire or an enchanted weapon. It seems there would be little incentive to engrave if the first time you tried it your sword was dropped to -3 and no effect from Elbereth was noticeable. I played without looking at the source for quite a while, but after I got stoned by a cockatrice whilst carrying a dead lizard I decided to investigate...(I'm not too patient at times). I don't care if people look at the source or avoid it, but I don't kid myself, a winner is a winner and unless someone wins the game without ever having talked to anyone or read net.games.hack or net.games.rogue then the winner deserves no special attention (other than being a winner). --Cliff
