[net.games.hack] I won!

cliff@unmvax.UUCP (01/24/85)

With the help of a black magic marker to write on the screen, I finally
won (or at least escaped with the amulet). I haven't put in the new 1.1
mods so it just says:

Number Points Name Hp [max]
  1 120948 cliff-F escaped the dungeon [max level 27]. 101 [101]

I wouldn't have been able to do it without having read the code (unlike rogue
which is straightforward). Knowing what goody to expect from the Minotaur and
how to use it helped. Having looted a bookstore and greened my two handed
sword to +6 didn't hurt (although it could of... I didn't think the soft limit
was so low!) Hooray! Now I can (clean up the screen, have a beer and) finish
my Master's degree!

As long as everyone else is boasting about high scores, I
just couldn't resist:

 1 205858 Aslan-C escaped the dungeon [max level 26]. 103 [103]

I picked up an incredible suit of armor (+3 chain mail, +3 gloves,
+2 shield, +0 helmet) from a ghost on level 16, not to mention a +5 long
sword (which became +6 by accident later on, but fortunately didn't
disappear). My only really scary moment was when a nymph stole my
sword deeper down, and I was left weaponless...fortunately, there was
strength in my bare hands yet.

Still, it was an ill-deserved and unwanted ball and chain that
saved my life. While my sword was missing I ran into two demons and a
Dragon, and led them a merry chase around a large room. Throwing the
ball beats potions of speed by a long shot.

Too bad our version 1.0 doesn't say "total winner" and all
that....

Someone at my site asked how a ghost could have died with all these
beautiful things, and since it happened to have been MY ghost from
a previous game, I know:

WIELDING A COCKATRICE IS VERY DANGEROUS!!

I take back an earlier comment about wishing for one -- don't ever
pick the darn things up! Of all the horrible things that can happen
to a wizard wearing all that armor and wielding a +5 long sword,
falling in a pit and touching a cockatrice in the fall has got to
be the worst.

So don't do it. Where do you draw the line? Do you ever discuss the game
with other people? Have they seen the source? Have you or they played as
the WIZARD? Ever read SPOILERs? The game is still interesting even though
I have read the source.

Speak for yourself. There are many people that want tips.

I guess you don't understand the significance of SPOILER in the subject line.
If you don't want the tips, don't read the SPOILERs.

Perhaps the reason that hack doesn't get excited when you exit with
the amulet and score 200,000 or so, is that:

1. You don't have to get to the maze to get a real amulet.

2. You get much better scores if you have several amulets (each doubles
your score).

My wife and I have scored over 30 million in games where we exited with
7 and 8 amulets. Where did all those amulets come from? Ghosts.

Where did all those ghosts come from? Well, now...

I find looking through the sources of a game like hack is tantamount to
cheating, and spoils the game for oneself.

Personally, I don't spend more than the occasional hour ( 2 ? ) per week on
it, and some weeks nothing at all. Looking through the sources would kill
all my interest.

I've never been below level 15, never had above 2000 points, and I still
find it a mildly amusing game for waiting-for-compiles-deadnesses.

Sorry for posting, this was another arduous day, flames via mail, please..
