I am now able to survive down to the 4th level, where I
met a giant ant A. Whenever it hits me I lose strength.\
I even quaffed a potion of gain strength and I still lost
strength. I wasn't able to run and collapsed under my load.
Does anyone have any suggestions for me?
Also, when I put on a ring it changed my Str: to 18/01 from
18. Can anyone explain what the /01 means? Many thanks!

Clare, what you wanted to quaff is a "restore strength" potion. This returns you strength to its highest natural level. This is used to combat attacks of A's that can wipe you out. Raise strength will do just that, but when the giant ant hits, your strength reduces. Regarding 18/01: The original scale runs 3 to 18 for strength. In DnD quaffing an gain strength would have no effect once you were at 18. This has been extended in Advanced DnD which adds a another scale once you go beyond 18. This scale runs from 18/01 to 18/00(after counting up to 18/99). This is the strength scale used in in hack and rogue. Peter Barada ima!pbear!peterb
