When you polymorph your	little dog into	something mean does he
have all the abilities of the new creature. I polymorphed mine
into a demon (&), he seems fairly powerful and wonderfully obedient.
Are there any dangers in this?

Plenty of dangers :

1. you die on a low level (of the dungeon) and leave behind a ghost and
a very powerful monster for that level. Its very upsetting to get
clobbered by a demon (&) or an umber hulk on level 3. (It has happened
to me, although I was to blame for leaving creating them in the 1st
   place).

2. You may fall through a trap-door and have to come back up the stairs
to get things (or for whatever reason). Try dealing with some heavy
   ex-dog waiting to meet you.

There are a number of variations of these scenarios.

****** SPOILER ******

My strategy is to polymorph the dog into some low level monster and the kill
it.
It will not hit back and you will get all the points. You can jump a few levels
this way. I try to do this to all converted dogs. I don't know if eating the
monster that once was a dog has the same effect as eating a dog. I will not
state this effect for those who don't know it.

He certainly does have all the qualities of the new monster,
just make sure to name him so you don't hit him by accident.
There is a drawback though:

If you ( or he) fall down a trap door or separate some how you
will lose him. Throwing Tripe/food doesn't tame anything but a dog.

Dogs are pretty good fighters, especially if they become LARGE dogs,
you're better off staying with a dog but it's fun to experiment.
