[net.games.hack] Hack on a personal computer

carl@ncr-tp.UUCP (Carl Kuck) (03/26/85)

Just a posting to let everyone interested (anyone? :-)) in the results of
porting PDP-11 hack to an 8088 MS/DOS machine. So far, the show and mklev
portions are running and appear to be bug free, the game itself runs but has
a number of bugs in it (see below).

Implementation language : Lattice 8088 C

Machine and system : NCR Decision Mate 5 w/512K memory, MS/DOS 2.0

Pitfalls and implementation problems : shell commands, signed characters,
execl calls, use of getpid and other U**X system calls.

Anyone interested can contact me at home (see below).

********** IMPLEMENTATION DETAILS AND BUGS FOLLOW - SPOILERS !!!! **********

The following bugs currently exist, suggestions for correcting them will be
rewarded with your favorite food ration :-).

1. The level given in "Welcome to level xxx." is a power of 2, instead of
   1, 2, 3, etc.

2. Messages generated by pline() will remain through several commands, some
others erase immediately following the next command.

3. The whatis command yields the message : one character only, please.

4. The outrip() procedure doesn't plug the correct values into the tombstone,
rather the "killer" is stuffed into all three (player, gold, and killer)
   slots.

5. I am sure there are others, I'm just too confused to remember them ...
