*** REPLACE THIS LINE WITH YOUR MESSAGE *** I am fairly new to Hack and the net so please excuse any questions that may have been asked before. 1. Is there any advantage to naming your dog? 2. Are blank scrolls good for anything? 3. What does the scroll 'You feel as if someone is helping you' do? 4. What is the whistle used for? Also if anyone has a list of the scrolls and what they do, please post them, it would be a big help. Thanks

If another dog appears on the scene, it can help you keep track of him, especially since you can C) an unknown dog, find out whether it's yours, and abort the command. Also, your dog keeps his name If you become a ghost, so when you see a named dog, or any named animal, you are on a ghost level. 2) I have never found a use for them, but I've also never managed to hit one with an identify scroll. I usually assume they are blank, and useless. 3) The scroll that makes you feel like someone is helping you is one of the most important items in the game--the remove curse scroll. This will cancel stickeycurses which you are under, and detatch the scroll of punishment's ball and chain. (A stickeycurse is when you put something on, or wield it, and it won't come off.) 4) There are two kinds of whistles. The kind that makes a "high" sound is just a whistle. If your dog is in hearing range, he will head towards you and follow you for a while. (This may depend on his loyalty, which is built up by feeding him.) The kind that makes a "strange" noise will teleport your dog to you. If there are monsters in all adjacent squares, he will appear in a next- to adjacent square and fight his way to you. 5) scrolls: I am working on a bunch of hints files, but I am not sure I am quite ready to send them out yet. Maybe soon. David Harmon, c/o swa@hu-talcott.ARPA ps -- please post any queries/replies to harmon%h-sc4@harvard.ARPA -- Let the beauty we love be what we do. Hello world, to quote a phrase, I now have a version of the PDP-11 hack that compiles on my Xenix-286 machine (286s and PDP-11s share the same memory constraints) I had to make a couple of changes to mklev.c and mklev.make.c that involved making the statements of the form : levl[fobj -> ox = xxxx][fobj -> oy = yyyy].scrnchr = fobj -> olet; into code resembling : fobj -> ox = xxxx; /* xxxx was expressions like MAZX, somex(), etc */ fobj -> oy = yyyy; /* same for yyyy */ levl[fobj -> ox][fobj -> oy].scrnchr = fobj -> olet; And most of the 'make new' code worked, (my system doesn't have install) so I simply copied hack, save, mklev, help, and record into PLAYDIR and used chmod to set the appropriate modes, and ran it. And it worked! sort of. Obvious initial problems are that a.) The initial inventory consists of several items named aXXglorkum where XX is some number. b.) The Status line shows me as having 1/U experience and U gold pieces. c.) And when I die my name is some random set of characters in the score file. Has anyone brought this version up and would be willing to field a few questions? And if I go in as Wizard how can I check the proper operation of the game? Any help would be appreciated. --Chuck -- - - - D I S C L A I M E R - - - {ihnp4,fortune}!dual\ All opinions expressed herein are my {qantel,idi}-> !intelca!cem own and not those of my employer, my {ucbvax,hao}!hplabs/ friends, or my avocado plant. :-}

As far as I know, this is just another snackin' food. I haven't seen the source to see if there is something special about them or not. One thing for sure : The net rumor about killing cockatrices with dead lizards is certainly just that, a rumor. You might have seen something about it reading this news- group or by eating a fortune cookie, but it is unfortunately false. >Also I have not been able to get Elebreth to work, what am I doing >wrong? If you write with your finger, then any movement or HJKL attack will scramble the name, and you are no longer protected. If you use a wand of fire or an edged weapon (my experience here is Hack version 1, note) then the engraving is more or less permanent (something like a 1 in 500 chance of scrambling it). If you're willing to use up a wand of fire, you can create a room in which you can strike monsters with (near total) impunity! -- John Woods, Charles River Data Systems, Framingham MA, (617) 626-1101 ...!decvax!frog!john, ...!mit-eddie!jfw, jfw%mit-ccc@MIT-XX.ARPA "MU" said the Sacred Chao...

> >> ... Dragons fire penetrates > >> Elbereth as well as ANY other human, (shopkeeppers, nurse etc). Nurses do *not* penetrate Elbereth. I often engrave Elbereth and strip with a nurse standing next to me. Then to attract her attention, I give her a little love pat. I believe that lecrottas (sp) do violate Elbereth. Chuck
