I agree with the people who claim Computer "Science" is not a true science. My impression is that there are two distinct sub-genres. The first group are engineers who take proven techniques and build programs from the specifications given. Much of software engineering is based on this approach. On the other hand, there is a small group of extremely talented people who I usually refer to as "artists". They do creative work and "invent from the pure stuff of thought." Of these two groups, the engineers who build software tools and design programs are the "scientists".
