Here's a little fortune cookie hint that comes in handy in some such situations: dogs will not step on cursed items. Rings seem to be cursed a good percentage of the time. Hunt around for a ring or some other cursed item (the little doggie won't pick it up), and drop it out in the hallway along with you gold. By placing this little obstacle strategically, you can prevent the dog from ever entering the room in which you do battle with the Leppie. Of course, this doesn't work in every situation. If the room has more than one entrance, it may be impossible to keep the dog out. And, of course, it's possible that you won't have come across any cursed items when the moment of truth arrives. Still, if you really are interested in keeping the dog around, it's an effective technique.
