I am quite sure most of you don't care who Elbereth is, but I feel compelled to post this anyway. Elbereth is the Sindarin (grey elven) name of Varda. She is the most powerful of the female spirits in Arda (the world), the mate of Manwe who is the right hand man of Eru (i.e. God). Among her many powers is the ability, when she and Manwe are on their thrones, to here any pleas for help from anywhere in Arda. This makes er especially important to the elves of middle-earth who are separated from Aman the Blessed by more than the Ocean. Furthermore, since her element is light, she is particularly offensive to the minions of Morgoth/Melkor (who feared her). There you have it. More than you want to read; less than I want to write. Read the first chapter of the Silmarillion (Ainulidale, I believe) for a more complete picture. RTC ...ihnp4!gargoyle!paideia!richard For he is a man, and that for him and many is sufficient tragedy. I don't seem to remember seeing this posted before, so if I am wrong, I am a mutant. When you etch "Elbereth" with a wand of fire, it burns the message into the floor. This allows you to stand there and pound on monsters without having to worry about being attacked. -- Mark Wutka Office of Computing Services Georgia Institute of Technology Atlanta, Ga. ...!{akgua,allegra,amd,hplabs,ihnp4,masscomp,ut-ngp}!gatech!gitpyr!wutka ...!{rlgvax,sb1,uf-cgrl,unmvax,ut-sally}!gatech!gitpyr!wutka this is what happens when I roll my head on the keyboard: b mfdfgm ,iutfrdffdbfv jkhgtxdhl;kuje il;'li5rdjil.idr

I just read an article saying that Elbereth was totally useless now except for resting. On the contrary, it is a pretty good substitute for the camera. Now the fighter and the knight have a way to get out of trouble when surrounded. Many people know what it is like to be surrounded by orcs or killer bees and be able to flash the camera in their eyes and run away while they were all wandering around. I always considered a camera essential to a great game. But now, I have won with a fighter, which I used to consider one of the weaker classes. I have done the same with a caveman. With Elbereth doing what it does now, you can really take advantage. I regret not trying this while I was in a hive, but I would think you could use Elbereth to clear out a bee hive and then take all the royal jelly. It works pretty well for clearing out a treasure zoo, though, provided there is no leprechaun in the room. -- Mark Wutka Office of Computing Services Georgia Institute of Technology Atlanta, Ga. ...!{akgua,allegra,amd,hplabs,ihnp4,masscomp,ut-ngp}!gatech!gitpyr!wutka ...!{rlgvax,sb1,uf-cgrl,unmvax,ut-sally}!gatech!gitpyr!wutka Official member of NERDS (NERDS Existing in a Recursively Defined System)
