[net.games.hack] Nymphs and Lepies

deg@druhi.UUCP (GillespieD) (10/01/85)

Okay, i think that eating nymphs and lepies might be good for me, but..

How can one possibly kill them? Lepies always steal my gold, and i'm lucky
if a nymphs doesn't seduce me a steals only one item.

When stalking a lep, leave your gold behind. If you're not carrying
gold and you're not standing on gold, it won't teleport away from the
fight.

Nymphs are much harder. A wand of cancellation will remove their
ability to seduce you, but they'll still often teleport away from a
fight. I use up my wands on these critters, or genocide them. If a
nymph takes something you've GOT to have (like your elven cloak), be
sure you've eaten a floating eye, then quaff a potion of blindness;
this will let you see the nymph wherever it is and you can run it down.
Even stripped naked, a strong character can defeat a nymph bare-handed
and retrieve the stolen goods; the danger here is from other wandering
monsters who catch you with your armor down.

The way *I* take care of those scumbag LEPRECHAUNS (I like to call them
Lepers - please don't flame about this (not intentionally harmful)
nickname) is when I find them [usually they are stationary] I go to a
remote room, drop all my gold (d$), and go back and wail on them! You
can usually go up one or two experience by killing them, although they
are hardy creatures. To give you an idea of their worth, I once brought
a caveman up to level 6 only on the first level of the dungeon, thanks
to them lepers. Nymphs - i have no advice. maybe throw things at them?

I usually wait until my wands are identified, and then blast them from
afar. If you don't have any gold and you hit a leprechaun, it will stay and
fight. You can also etch and let your dog kill the leprechaun (it will take
a little time) but then the dog might eat the leprechaun before you get to it.
You have to be careful, Lepies have a lot of hit points (that's why your level
rises so dramatically when you kill one early) and they teleport around you when
fighting.

I use to kill them by engraving Elbereth with my bare hands
and kill them with my bow and arrows.

Not bad advice, but what characters are you playing? An easier strategy
if you are playing a Caveman is: E- (engrave empty-handed) "Elbereth".
Then, since cavemen are usually equipped with a quantum of arrows, weild
your bow, and fire away.

And, of course, if you have a crossbow and bolts, or some rocks (even)
simply follow the same strategy, and let him have it.

Well, I usually follow the same strategy with nymphs, but a ring of
adornment does wonders. Also, they don't make very good theives if
they are blinded (tourist). Using your wands on something this "low"
is really something I would consider a waste. I mean, use all of
your magic on something that deserves it...like dragons, cockatrices...

On leppies and Elbereth :-

If you try that with version 10.3 you'll end up very broke. Throwing an
article has the same effect as moving ie no more protection. To my mind this
has vastly reduced the pension prospects of speliologists in particular.

I've heard that re-incarnation is making a come-back.

I have never had any luck with rings of adornment. WHat do you do
with them? I have tried wearing them, but nymphs still rob me blind.
   Do you wield it??

         yes.

A ring of adornment has no effect on a nymph.

Care to explain the message I got...?

"The Nymph is bedazzled by your ring."

This one ought to be good....

lanin@csd2.UUCP (Vladimir Lanin) (10/21/85)

I have successfully used the ring of adornment against a nymph only
once, while playing PC Hack, adapted from 1.0.1.
I put it on my right hand, and when the nymph later tried to seduce
me, I got a message like "The plain nymph tries to seduce you,
but you don't seem interested."
(Normally, you get "The beautiful nymph seduces you and starts taking off
your armor.")
Curiously, when I once put the ring on my left hand,
the nymph still robbed me blind.
However, that time, I put the ring on just as it was about to attack.
Perhaps that was the problem, not the left hand.

I think its a variable, whether or not a ring works. First time I heard
about the ring of adornment bit, I wore it, and the slime stole a scroll of
enchant weapon. Would have come in handy if i had found a worm tooth. So
next time I had one, I wielded it, and she was "dazzled by the ring of adorn-
ment" and I slew her.

A few days later, it happened again, but no such luck. I think its
like the same chances should a homunculus put you to sleep or a gelatinous
cube freezing you, etc. So try it, but the chances are if you have anything
valuable you really need, Murphy's Law becomes part of the source code.

By the way. Nymphs are pains in the groin, but I got a little more
respect for them after I read a scroll of punishment--and she took the
ball and chain!
