Damn mimics! Here I had nursed my spelunker down to level 20, just finished off a dragon, and got swallowed by a lurker above. "No problem," I think, "I'll just dig my way out. This guy will be sorry he tried to eat me." Well, I don't even get one swing in with my pickaxe, and I'm digested by the 'mysterious monster'. Turns out I was swallowed by a mimic! When I tried to hit it (from its inside, no less), it showed its true colors (?-)). Of course, since a mimic doesn't have enough of a stomach to hold a rotting gelatinous cube, that was the end of me. The worst thing was, I had a ring of protection from shape changers in my pack, but my fingers were all busy with other rings. I guess there is some warped logic by which a mimic gets the ability to swallow me just by imitating something else that does have that ability, but you'd think it would have the decency to keep that ability. I guess the only way out of a mimic-cum-lurker-above is to read a scroll of teleportation. (Or will that even work?). -- Ted Hopp {seismo,umcp-cs}!nbs-amrf!hopp

It changed from a lurker into a mimic, spelling your doom. Mimics only mimic inanimate objects, never monsters. "The worst thing was, I had a ring of protection from shape changers in my pack, but my fingers were all busy with other rings." It doesn't matter. If you had put on the ring, the creature would have reverted to a chameleon, which also has a tiny stomach. Same result. Or you can carry a mondo weapon (like a crysknife) and carve on its stomach; this usually works for me. Or you could have waded onto the level wearing the ring of protection from shape changers. -=- Andrew Klossner (decvax!tektronix!tekecs!andrew) [UUCP] (tekecs!andrew.tektronix@csnet-relay) [ARPA]

I came accross an interesting incident, I was standing on the !WORD!, and began to eat (emtpy handed) a tin. Well a monster came up to me, and I "stopped eating". Well this monster was whimpy, so I wielded my mace (letter a.), and began attacking the monster. While beating on him, I did a ')' to see my weapon, and found that I was wielding the tin (letter a.). So, how the heck did the tin that was at the end of my inventory move to the very top??? This has happened to me 2-3 times, and our version of hack (1.02, who'd want 1.03?), hasn't been tampered with. Any help would be most appreciated. +====+ Yup, teleportation will work, but it'd better be your first move.

What happened to you is this: When you pick up an item and start eating it, Hack puts that item at the BEGINNING of your inventory. If you successfully manage to finish eating it, it gets taken out of your inventory and all returns to normal. The above situation was caused by the interruption... The tin had been picked up, placed at the start of the inventory, and stayed there as item 'a'. This seems to happen when eating something from your inventory as well. Sound okay? ----- -- Lewis R. Zap a wand of polymorph, then attack. If you've polymorphed it into something relatively easy to off, you're out easy. It's always worked for me. Diane Holt Interactive Systems, Inc. ima!ism780 P.S. Did you know you can't genocide trappers (,). I tried it, and it just kept re-prompting for what monster I want to wipe out. D.H.
