Help. I just got down to level 7 of the dungeon and was attacked by a shopkeeper for some unknown reason. I did nothing to provoke him and he just ran up a killed me in two swings. (I tried invoking the name of Elbereth, but it had no effect.) I wasn't even near a shop as far as I could tell, not had I ever entered and left any shop without paying. What happened? I did meet a ghost on level 6, but he finally left me alone. The ever clumsy Gilgabit (a.k.a. Scott A. Stewart LMSC - Sunnyvale)

But, I've never had a shopkeeper that was angered by somebody else attack me. Also, you can run across a shopkeeper asking you for money if you got killed some other way on that level (or you took him down with you to some other level that you did get killed on). If another player had aggravated a shopkeeper, and say teleported the sucker away, then that shopkeeper might wander around looking for any "@"'s to kill (ie. YOU). Just part of the fun! It's a neat feature, despite this. Last night I found the remains of a pretty hefty Wizard who'd been killed. After I lost his ghost in the bushes, and blasted away the moster that had killed the poor bloke, I collected all his treasures (they were in a pile on the ground). I wonder what would happen if I ran into another player while in the dungeon (:^]). Gelmand the Vincible -- LIVE: Barry A. Does killing a polymorphed shopkeeper (or guard or dog or nurse) make you lose luck points, as you do when killing one normally? What about eating the polymorphed corpse? The Armoured Dormouse

It would appear that, while alive, the ghost raided a shop and escaped, forcing the shopkeeper to follow him out. It would also appear that at the time of death, the would-be ghost must have been wearing a ring of conflict. (The affected shopkeeper seems to retain his fellings of conflict into the next life. -- Name: John Ruschmeyer US Mail: Monmouth College, W. I found out the hard way ... Had a wand of polymorph, poly'd the heck out of many, many shopkeepers, killed them, took the money and ran. Yes, if you kill/eat something that was once a shopkeeper it *really* craps on your luck points. So much so, that since I had killed and eaten so many, wands of wishing would not work for me... tp. -- ----------------------------------------------------------------- - ARPA: Brisco@rutgers - - UUCP: (ihnp4!ut-sally, siesmo, allegra!packard) !topaz!brisco - -----------------------------------------------------------------
