[net.games.hack] Question about unusual behavior when wielding dead cockatrices

ray@utcsri.UUCP (Raymond Allen) (02/03/86)

If you are wielding a dead cockatrice and you hit any monster with
it you see a message similar to:

"you hit the (whatever) with the cockatice corpse --more--"
"the (whatever) is turned to stone!"

The problem is that the (whatever) is *not* turned to stone.
You only get the usual corpse. If you tame a cockatrice with a scroll
of taming (or polymorph your dog into a cockatrice) when it hits another
monster you end up with a pile of rocks which is the appropriate (i think)
result. There is a routine 'mstone()' which, i think, turns a monster
into a pile of rocks and is invoked when your pet cockatrice hits another
monster.

Now the $64 question. Should hack be modified so that hitting
a monster with a dead cockatrice will turn that monster into a pile of
rocks? I think that this would be appropriate considering the effects
of a tame cockatrice hitting other monsters. I believe that this
is relevant to all versions of hack although we are using 1.0.3 here.

	Opinions, comments etc. all welcome.

I agree that this is a bug, though I had never tamed a cockatrice before
so I didn't know that the proper behavior occurs in that case (though the
fact that it does argues more strongly that it's a bug). (in 1.0.2 and 1.0.3)

So yes, it should be changed, except that the author of the game is no longer
on the net. I kind of like the idea of an "official" hack so winning on my
machine is the same as winning on other machines (some of the patches I've seen
posted on this list really change the difficulty of the game).

I don't find it any problem. The cockatrice normally goes around turning
monsters into boulders. I prefer to turn them into dead monsters, myself.
If only there were a scroll of preservation so the cockatrice wouldn't
decay, it'd be wonderful...
