During one of my better games of hack (v1.0.3.), I was on the way back up with the the amulet, ~70,000 gold pieces and other assorted goodies. I had left a pile of useless wands at an earlier level and on reaching this level decided to do a bit of polymorphing of wands in order to get more wands of wishing. So that I could move the wands about etc. I dumped my gold in the corner of the room. While I was involved in polymorphing the wands a bunch of Orcs appeared in the room near the gold. One of them moved straight on to it and picked it up. I immediately rushed over and polished them off with my 3 +5 crysknives, and picked up the pile of gold. Lo and behold! there was only ~10,000 gold pieces there. The question is where did it go? None of the Orcs escaped, there were no trapdoors, and anyway the first one grabbed the whole lot. This suggests a bug of some kind. Does anyone know if there is a limit to the amount of gold a monster may carry, has Andries put the amount of gold a monster can carry in some horribly small bit field that clipped a bit or two off the top? I'll wait for replies from all you Hack source delvers, and if no-one has the answer I suppose I'll have to do it myself.
