The program is set-up so that you can do one attack against Yendor before he teleports up one level. The easiest way to stop him is the wand of polymorph, although the wands of death, and striking should also have some could effects. For each level that Yendor teleports up, he loses strength, so chasing him will also help in the long run if you are not in possession of these wands.
