If your hack administatrator has not put the "rumors" file in the hack
directory, then you won't get fortunes out of fortune cookies. We had
this problem for a while here because our hack admin (*blush*) didn't
know about the file. Once in place, hack will start giving you fortunes.

In Hack 1.0, the response you give the guard is not even processed ! I have
found that the guard doesn't attack - it just waits for you to 'd$' and
follow. Therefore, I just '.' until I teleport back out (assuming that's
how I got there in the first place).

I used to know what 'maude' meant, but I forget.

Grep the source for 'Elbereth', if you really want to know. Posting it here
would be a real spoiler.

Even better: Leave a cockatrice on the stairs to the previous level.
There is *still* a bones file lurking on level 16 or so here that gives
you a nasty surprise when you go down the stairs. Many of us have
switched to the knight character, in spite of his general wimpiness.

At least until someone disarms that booby trap.

I have this bad feeling that this is the way it always works. The 'JERK' had
to wear (and carry) the gloves before wielding (and carrying) the 'c'. When he
died, hack unloaded his possessions in a..zA..Z order, putting the 'c' higher
in the heap than the gloves. You will always encounter the 'c' before the
gloves.

Leave a time-bomb behind for posterity.. carry a cockatrice !

You read a scroll of amnesia. Maybe it's called something else on your version.

Possible Command Syntax:

Add a command G (for Grab) that works the same way as the D (Drop)
command does. You ask for object classes or " ", u, or a, and you are
iteratively asked (ynaq) about each object in the pile under your feet.
Adding an I command to display a list of the objects under your feet
would be helpful. If this list was lettered, a g (for grab) command
similar to the d command would also be useful.

Orthogonal command sets are nice!	;-}

I would leave the default action, when moving onto a square, picking up
all possible objects.

It might be nice to add an r (for recent) option to the D (and proposed
G) commands that would Drop (or Grab) the objects picked up (or dropped)
in the last Grab (or Drop) move. This would make recovering from the
default action easy, and would also aid in re-dropping items when its
time to eat a just-killed monster.

BTW, should a multiple drop or grab take more time than a single move?
Should it be 1 move or a fraction of a move for each object?
Interesting trade off between realism and playing convenience.

I accidentally threw a potion of healing onto a monster,
and hack said something like "the XXX looks refreshed".
So throwing potions works, but obviously not with damaging potions.

Sorry folks, forgot to tell you its in net.sources.games. You do all get that
newsgroup, don't you???

Update:

Those of you with non-PC/IX systems can grab the code and drop the assembler
stuff to get it running. The assembler just speeded up deficiencies in the
string package by a few percent.

Have Fun !

Try using a wand of digging and zapping it in ">" direction
or applying a pick-axe in the same ">", if you use a wand of digging
you will build a hole and fall though, if you use a pick-axe
it will take two turns....
