>Now for some questions of my own:
>
>Has anybody ever caught or killed a unicorn? What happens if you
>eat it?

NOT a good idea. I don't think anyone in their right mind would kill
a unicorn. If you did, you'd -10 luck points. With luck like that
you might as well chuck your wands of wishing.

>A couple of people mentioned potions of speed and royal jelly as
>safeguards against xans. How does this work?

Well, it isn't a safeguard, it's a cure. If you drink a potion of speed
after the prick xans you in the leg...I mean after the xan pricks you in
the leg...then it says "Your legs feel somewhat better."

>I wasn't paying much attention to the "stuck at level 29 or so"
>discussion, and now I find I'm stuck there myself. My pick-axe won't get
>through the floor, so how do I get down?

******SPOILER********

(But I think everybody knows this anyway.)
You have to be fire resistant. You put on a ring of teleport control.
Quaff a potion of confusion. Read a scroll of teleportation.
Since you are confused, you mispronounce the magic words...-more-
To what level would you like to teleport? (say 39)
You arrive at the center of the earth...-more-
Unfortunately, it is there that hell is located. -more-
But the fire doesn't seem to harm you.
(Now wasn't that simple?)

>Somebody mentioned making a trapdoor on the level above with the pickaxe,
>but how do I know that won't just drop me in the maze again? What if
>I can't find scrolls of teleportation?

This is not going to work. You'll still wind up on the same level,
which is the first maze level. Each level from 26 to 39 is a labyrinth.
AND, each one has a wand of wishing, which is nice. Wish for diamonds...
3 at a time.

>If you go down by carving holes in the floor, how do you get back up?
>I assume the ring of levitation is the secret, but how do you find the
>hole again? Do you have to do the whole rest of the game with
>teleortation/confusion?

All of the aforementioned levels have up staircases, but not down
staircases. That's why you go to 39, get the Amulet, and work your
way back up.

>What good is money besides buying stuff and raising your score? How
>does it raise your score, do you have to have it on you when the game
>ends?

Yes, you have to have the money on you.

>What good are gems besides selling in shops and giving unicorns?

Also, when you die or win it raises your score a LOT. Diamonds are not
the only valuable ones, either. But MOST gems that you get early on are
worthless pieces of <insert your favorite color here> glass.

>Are unicorns good for anything besides raising your luck?

Geez, isn't that good enough? Giving an unidentified gem to a unicorn
gives you +1, and giving her an identified VALUABLE one (a jade stone,
etc.) gives you +5. Having luck of 5 or more just about guarentees you'll
never miss when you swing at a monster.

>How do you get close enough to a unicorn to give it a gem? I find them
>to be much too elusive.

Patience. You have to be in a direct firing line with her and throw the
gem at her. (You miss the unicorn..-more- The unicorn graciously accepts
your gift.) Basically, you just have to chase her around and hope you
catch her off guard. Or, try to corner her into a trap. If you have a pick-
axe, you can make one yourself.

>Why do wands of wishing not always work ("unfortunately, nothing happens")?
>Does this have something to do with your luck?

Yes.
The code generates a random number (either 0 or 1) when you zap a wand
of wishing. It then adds this number to your current luck. If it's positive,
it gives you the wish. If it's 0 or negative, you get "Unfortunately,
nothing happens." Therefore, if you have negative luck, you can't get ever
get a wish.

>What does the ring of stealth do?

Ya know how when you walk into a killer bee hive or David's Treasure
Zoo, all the monsters head right for you? If you have a ring of
stealth on, they don't see you, and you can walk in pretty much unnoticed.
This is handy in big zoos, because then you can walk in and bash on
monsters one at a time without being surrounded and getting beat on
from all sides.

>What does the wand of cancellation do?

If you zap a L, he can't rob you. N, she can't steal from you.
E, it won't freeze you. R, it can't rust your armor. Et cetera.

Also, I think your list of effects when you eat dead monsters is
not quite right in a lot of places. In general, things are edible
at first, and then they go rotten (obviously, there are exceptions).
