I tried this today; it doesn't work.

Here are a couple of questions: (*SPOILER ALERT*)

When one is in the vault and the guard comes in and asks who you are,
you can answer "Croesus" and he goes away. However, he takes the door
with him, so I don't see how this helps. Is there any way out other
than teleportation?

Also, is there any way to replace the functionality of a ring of
teleport control?

Wand of digging.

No

The corridor created by the guard is a "pseudo-corridor"; it's only
there when the guard leads you out.

Yup. Dig. (wand or picky-axe)

Nope.

Also, RE: "You have to be naked to let the nurse help you gain hit points"

It seems to me that if you already had a means of digging out you shouldn't
even wait for the Guard, just take the gold and high-tail outta there!
Unless the guard will come looking for you.

Of course, I haven't had the opportunity to take a wand of digging or
a pick-axe into the vault. I'm always a teleporter with or without the
  ring of teleport control.

...You hit the Nymph. She seduces you and starts taking of your armor.
taking off everything, she sees what you have under it, and leaves
disappointed....
