Ballads, Bards and Bagpipes is no longer on the air. I have their latest discography (1983) and would be happy to send a copy to anyone sending me an SASE at the address below. As the show did, the discography leans heavily toward revival bands and instrumental music. (I often groused about BBB that it contained few ballads, no bards, and hardly ever a bagpipe.) :-) However, there is an excellent show (having bards, ballads, and pipe music in abundance) currently being broadcast from the University of North Carolina. The Thistle and Shamrock is a program of mainly Scottish and Irish traditional music, with some music from other Celtic areas - Wales, Brittany, etc. The show's host, Fiona Ritchie, seems to be Irish by her accent. Her programs are often built around themes; they feature traditional and revival singers and include singing in both Irish and Scottish Gaelic. This show is carried in my area on a National Public Radio station (KCSM-FM, 91, San Mateo CA), and I assume that the same would be true in other areas. A local library should be able to provide NPR information, or you could write to the show at: The Thistle and Shamrock WFAE University of North Carolina Charlotte, North Carolina 28223 (SASE please) or NPR at: National Public Radio 2025 'M' Street Northwest Washington D.C. 20036 Mary Eileen Johnson {ihnp4,ucbvax,cbosgd,decwrl,amd}!dual!ptsfa!mej 77 Norwood Avenue, Kensington, CA 94707

Here in Washington there is a good folk music show on WETA (FM 91), one of the public radio stations. The show is called "Traditions" and is hosted by Mary Cliff - a big figure in the local folk music sceen (I think she had something to do with the original formation of the Washington Folklore Society - but that's another story). Anyway, the show is on from 8:00 pm to 1:00 am Saturday nights (after PHC). The show has quite a range of music - British and American traditional music, current folk music, some blues, spirituals, all sorts of stuff. Cliff Shaffer ...!rlgvax!cvl!cas
