-------------------------- Slightly misposted, as the only connection the song has with folk music is Dave Van Ronk. There was a "hit" recording of the song about 40 years ago (give or take 10 years) by Bing Crosby. Needless to say, the presentation was quite different from Van Ronk's (crooning vs. shouting). -- Morris M. Keesan {decvax,linus,ihnp4,wivax,wjh12,ima}!bbncca!keesan keesan @ BBN-UNIX.ARPA

For those who are in the "over the hill" age range, we remember "Swinging on a Star" as a very popular song in its day. It was introduced by Bing Crosby in the movie "Going My Way" in which he played a Catholic priest named Father O'Mally. Writer-directory Leo McCarey won two Oscars. Academy Awards also went to Crosby and co-star Barry Fitzgerald. The movie won Best Picture Oscar, and "Swinging on a Star" won the Best Song award. (1944) Words and Music by Johnny Blake and Jimmy Van Heusen copyright 1944 by Bourne Co. and Dorsey Bros. Music, Inc. The song was a big hit as a single (recorded by Bing Crosby). So if you want to hear it by the "Ol' Groaner", just keep an eye on your TV listings for the movie.
