[net.music.folk] Two Gentlemen Folk--Revisited

bsd@psuvm.UUCP (04/23/85)

Sometime around the first of the year, there was a discussion
here about a show on PBS called Two Gentlemen Folk that
starred Benjamin Luxton and Bill Crofut.

Well, I don't know if this was mentioned, but I found out that
the two of them have made an album called 'Simple Gifts' that
includes many of the songs from the show. I just heard a friends
copy and I don't know the label, but I'm going to try to find it.
What the two of them do to 'Simple Gifts' and 'Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye'
is incredible.

They also have another album, All Throught the Night, Pro Arte PAD 188.
I saw this in a used record shop, so I don't know whether it is still
'in print'.

Having been at the 'Two Gentlemen Folk' taping (my brother is the lead
string string guitarist), there are some things you should know about the
concert. 1) The day it was taped, it was 101F outside, and hotter inside.
This was because they closed all of the doors and had the air conditioning
off. 2) 80% of the 'audience' were ringers. Most were professional singers
from the Berkshires area who were 'given' tickets to a) fill the audience
and b) help the sing-alongs. The concert was enjoyable but terribly over-
rehearsed (the musicians spent a week (14 hours a day) preparing.

Bill Crofut has either 2 or 3 albums by himself, the 'best' of them being
his 'Goshen Concert' album (label unknown). Together, they were working on
a new album in England (as of last year) but I don't know if it has been
released yet. Should you want to reach Bill, he lives out in the Berkshires
(Mass.) but I don't have my address book handy. If you want to reach him,
send me a message and I'll send you his address.

One last note - the soundtrack for TGF was done in stereo and was simulcast
during it's first showing in Boston.
