[net.music.folk] Folk Music in Orlando, Fla.

wildhog@uwmacc.UUCP (Wild Hog in the Woods) (05/02/85)

I think I'd be able to compile a list of your favorite (or not favorite)
folk clubs, coffeehouses, whatever. In my opinion, we should restrict
this list to *regular* places to hear folk music (yes, bluegrass too),
as opposed to festivals, so regular means at least once a month (some
places *do* run that infrequently).

So, send the name, address, phone (if any) of each place, as well as
what type of music is generally available there. If available, send
along when the place is open, and perhaps what the usual cover is.
Add any additional comments that you think are relevant as well.

I'll summarize to the net after an acceptable interval, and keep
updates as appropriate.

There is an organization called "Hey Rube!" which has already
put together such a list, though their perspective is more from the
performer's viewpoint (it's primarily a self-help organization of
folk and acoustic performers -- I can get more details about them if
you are interested). Perhaps to avoid duplication of effort, we should
start with their list (and make additions and corrections from the
readers of this newsgroup -- such lists tend to become outdated quickly).

There is usually some metion of Hey Rube! in almost any issue of Sing Out!,
either in someone's column (such Michael Cooney), or I believe they
occasionally run ads. There are 2 classes of membership -- a more
expensive full membership for active performers (includes access to
a group health plan, etc.), and a cheaper supporter-type membership
for those interested in supporting the group (I think that Plowshares
Coffeehouse, the folk music club that I volunteer for, may be a member
of the second class).
