[net.music.folk] Request for Fiddle Workshop info

iltis@ucsbcsl.UUCP ( ) (06/10/85)

Does anyone have information about fiddle workshops taking
place in Northern California and/or Washington State during
the month of August? I am particularly curious about a
rumored workshop in Port Townsend, Washington. Thanks in advance.

Port Townsend has 2 festivals:
Festival of American Fiddle Tunes June 30-July 7
(it's always the week containing the 4th of July)
This year the emphasis is on southern music (Appalachian & Cajun).
I've gone to this for 4 years and enjoy it immensely.

International Folk Dance/Music Festival August 19-24
	Greek, Irish, Scandinavian, American squares
I've never gone but I know lots of folks who have, and all of
	them liked it.

You can get their flyer (which covers both festivals) by writing:
	Centrum
	POB 1158
	Port Townsend, WA 98368
	(206) 385-3102

The fiddle tunes festival usually fills up quickly; however, this year there
were still vacancies as of May 31 (when Frank Ferrel, the director, was
performing here in SF at Plowshares).  Tuition is $110 for either week;
room & board is $140 for fiddle tunes and $120 for Intl Dance.

Other things happening in Northern California in August:

Lark in the Morning Music Celebration #11	August 2-11
	in Mendecino
This is a gathering which covers a wide range of music -- Irish,
Cajun, Balkan, Klezmer, Scand, French, South American, etc.
There are about 25 people listed for staff (mostly from Northern
California). I haven't gone to this one either, but again, it's
highly recommended. My impression is that is a lot looser than
Port Townsend; it seems to be the spiritual descendant of the
	late Sweetsmill.
	Write them at:

From the diverse to the specific:
Valley of the Moon Scottish Fiddle Camp Aug 24-30
	in Sonoma
I don't have any details with me, but if you can't find out any
info anywhere else, let me know and I'll dig it up. It's being
organized by Alisdair Fraser, who lives in the Santa Rosa
area (you might try directory assistance - area code 707).
On staff (along with Alisdair and some others) will be Buddy
MacMasters, a great Cape Breton fiddler who was at Port Townsend
last year and will be performing (together with Alisdair) in
California this month - he'll be at the Beverly Hills Summer
Solstice Festival this weekend (6/22-23) and then at various
places in Northern California next week (including Plowshares
Coffeehouse, Fort Mason Center, San Francisco, on Fri June 28).

There is also a midsummer Bluegrass Festival at Grass Valley Aug 2-4.
I don't have any details.

The fall CBA Grass Valley Bluegrass Festival is Labor Day weekend,
as are Strawberry Bluegrass Festival (Camp Mather, Yosemite) and the
SF Folk Music Club's gathering at Camp Cutter in the Santa Cruz mountains.
