[net.music.folk] Airlines and instruments--one more time

[This is a cross-post because the original discussion was in net.folk.
However, the subject is not specifically folk.]

My mother decided to bring her banjo along on her recent trip from Miami
to Ohio. It was it its hard case, and then put in one of the airline's
cardboard boxes (Piedmont--they insisted) with padding. She had to sign
101 releases promising not to sue them if it was damaged. When she got to
Cincinnati, the head had been completely broken off. $140 repair bill,
plus lots of frustration. Through a box and a hard case, they did this.
Sheesh.

I therefore vow that hereuntoafter, my dulcimer flies where I fly. Period.

[oh, yes, and my mother suggested that if the instrument is not too large,
you can probably put it in a garment bag, carry it on, and hang it up.
Just be sure you get on the plane while there's still room to do this. Also
beware of idiots trying to shove 'just one more bag' in the little
compartment.....]
