[ca.politics] Racism in Palo Alto

sloane@orc.olivetti.com (12/20/89)

On my way out to lunch this afternoon, I passed the Jack-in-the-Box
on El Camino in Palo Alto, where there were half a dozen pickets with
signs and leaflets. I spoke briefly with Dr. Maurice Davis (see below).

Here is the text of the leaflet:

(Headline)

DEMONSTRATION IN PROTEST OF A POLICY OF RACIAL DISCRIMINATION AGAINST BLACK
AMERICAN CUSTOMERS BY THIS JACK-IN-THE-BOX STORE LOCATED AT
2280 EL CAMINO REAL, PALO ALTO, CALIFORNIA

(Text)

The purpose of this demonstration is to protest a policy of racial
discrimination against Black American customers at this Jack-in-the-Box
store located at 2280 El Camino Real, Palo Alto, California.

On Friday, November 17, 1989 at approximately 11:45 P.M., Doctor
Maurice Davis, M.D., a Black psychiatrist, was refused service inside
this Jack-in-the-Box store. The couter person called Dr. Davis a
"nigger" and made other derogatory statements about Black Americans.
This counter person stated to Dr. Davis that if he wanted food, he
sould "go back to Africa and get it there". This same counter person
stated that if it were left up to her, she would never serve any Blacks
at all inside the store. She stated that she only served "niggers" in
the drive-through to "get rid of those fucking niggers" so she could
wait on her "good" customers.

When Dr. Davis stated to this same counter person that he (Dr. Davis) would be
reporting her outrageous behavior to her superiors, she stated that she could
"care less".

If you feel that the above behavior on the part of Jack-in-the_Box is
outrageous, humiliating, and intolerable, please let it be known by
writing and/or calling the following:

	Jack-in-the-Box
	General Offices
	2395 American Avenue
	Hayward, California
	(415) 783-7200

I think this speaks for itself. Anybody have anything to add?
