[net.religion.christian] pleasing God

colonel@gloria.UUCP (George Sicherman) (01/27/85)

> Christians accept that they cannot please God by what they do here on earth.
> The law is just too hard for mortal man to obey. But, even in failure,
> Christians are assured of God's love and forgiveness.

That's not what everybody believes. If I remember _Pilgrim's Progress_
rightly, Bunyan has Moses ("the law") beat Christian up, and then Jesus
comes along and tells Moses to lay off; "the law" is no longer to be
used to damn all sinners. A modern charismatic would say that God
always loves you and is pleased with you, even when your sins displease
him.

This may be only a semantic distinction. It seems strange to write of
"failure" when one is assured of God's love.
