The person who led the experiment in which sane people entered mental hospitals and were considered schizophrenic by all but the other patients was Dr. David Rosenhan of Stanford University. The article reporting the work appeared in Science the week of January 19, 1973. (I know because I looked at my notes from Rosenhan's Abnormal Psychology course that I took as an undergraduate). The demonstration is a sober one: the psychiatric diagnoses are only labels that are not reliably useful; they only "work" because they fit with the obvious fact that the people are in a mental hospital.
