I had never heard of the 'baptism of the holy spirit' until two years
ago when a friend mentioned it. I grew up in the Lutheran church (LCA)
and attended sunday school, chatecatical clases, etc., and thought I was
familiar with the basic tenets of Christianity, and I was really
suprised to find out that anyone thought there was such a thing.
(This year, however, when I gave up junk food for Lent, I was again
surprised to find out how many of my Christian friends didn't know
what Lent is!)

Lady Godiva mentions 'too much emphasis on the Holy Spirit.'

Does this mean Baptism of the Holy Spirit? Would the Catholic/
Episcopal/Lutheran netters explain why no such thing exists?
Why I was never even told anyone thought it did?
What was John the Baptist talking about?
Would a charismatic explain why it is important?

It seems all seems rather selfish to me. I don't think it can make
one any more of a Christian. I've heard that
the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is something you have to ask for.
This seems rather selfish. Lord, make me better than them.

Would a charismatic say I'm in trouble if I don't worry about it?

Changing the subject, I displayed my ignornace a while ago in a query
about Luther and the Magesterium. V6M posted the following response:

Thanks. I think my problem was I don't know what a Magesterium
is. From context I had assumed that it meant the current teaching of the
Roman Catholic Church (current in one's time). I must be wrong.
Sorry about my getting upset.

Could someone please explain what it really is?

Vince Marchionni: I can't write you or I'd have sent you the above
apology long ago. I used the address 'akgua!psuvax1!psuvm!v6m'
and recieved mail back from psuvax1.UUCP that says:
> bad system name: psuvm
> uux failed. code 68
> 550 psuvm!v6m... Host unknown
Note that others may have this problem, too.
Send me your correct address!
