There was some discussion here a while ago about creeds, and the possibility (remote, most people agreed) of a new universal council which could somehow compose a statement all Christians would accept. It occurs to me that most American readers will not have seen -- and some might find interesting -- a creed which was adopted some years ago by the United Church of Canada, a denomination here which embraces Methodists, Congregationalists, most Presbyterians, and a small group formerly called the Evangelical United Brethren. This statement is simply called "A New Creed" in the United Church service book, but since the ancient creeds and other documents have traditionally been named for the place where they were written, it might be labelled the Canadian Creed. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * We are not alone: we live in God's world. We believe in God, who has created and is creating, who has come in Jesus, the word made flesh, to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit. We trust in God. We are called to be the church: to celebrate God's presence, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our judge and our hope. In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone: Thanks be to God. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
