Thanks, Jim, for your excellent article explaining the meaning of the verses, based on the actual words used in the writings, and the interpretation based on who was being referred to. One more verse to consider as to why we will not become God's equal, but we can become like Him: Mathew 10:24-25 - "No pupil outranks his teacher, no slave his master. The pupil should be glad to become like his teacher, the slave like his master. ..." (Jesus). It's important to note here that we are referred to as pupils and slaves. God's the One Who does the teaching, we can chose to learn, but we don't teach ourselves, at least nothing of any eternal worth. God's the One Who does the commanding, we can chose to obey, but we can't command ourselves into eternal happiness or immortality. I just want to be more like Him. I fail often, and fall on my face a lot. But I trust God to be my faithful Teacher and Master, always in Love with me, even when I screw up. I'm just beginning to understand that those are the times He teaches me the most about really living. It's not a lot of fun at times, but somehow He makes me better for it.
