[net.micro.mac] What's the next step?

[decisions -- decisions]

With all the latest upgrade announcements and predictions coming out for
the Mac, I think this is an exciting and confusing for Mac owners. For
example, I am trying to upgrade my Mac System and the next step is no
longer a simple choice.

I have a "slim" Mac with just the one disk drive. I have been saving my
nickles and dimes intrying to improve the system. I thought that I would
try to get an external disk drive first, and then get the memory upgrade.
But now there are announcements/rumors of a double-sided disk drive Real
Soon Now and possibly a decent hard disk system. I've even heard rumors of
another upgrade for still more features.

Now I know that with a new machine like the Mac, there will always be
improvements along the way, but I am still unsure of my next step. I would
be interested in hearing what other Mac owners think of as the logical
system improvement path.

Mail or post responses. If I get enough mail, I'll post results to the
net. Thanks.

I agree... this is an extremely exciting period. But it reminds me of the
ancient Chinese curse, "May you live in exciting times." The nerve-racking
questions of what to get have been a constant source of self-reflection; I'm
sure that whatever my decision is, I'll kick myself at sometime later.

The major factors to include in your purchase plan are:

	1) Ability to do the tasks you WILL be doing the most.

	2) Ability to upgrade later.

I can tell you how I reached my decision: I am buying a Fat Mac with a
Imagewriter and a 1200 baud terminal. I am also buying the external drive
-- I could probably get by without it, using RAMdisk (thanks to whoever
posted the sources!!), but I think it might be helpful in some cases. The
drawbacks for buying this package: 1) Current Mac has no jack for later
monitors (color, larger), and 2) no hard disk. I have decided not to wait
for a Mac with these features because 1) Color, to me, is not very useful,
and my eyes are good, and 2) since I'm not doing programming ON the Mac (at
this time), disk intensive activity should be at a minimum (however, a)
databases are a definite possibility, and b) I will be downloading a lot of
net.sources and fa.info-mac sources onto it).

Oh well, one man's opinion....
