[Pesticidal verbiage] It looks as though the binhex format is becoming the de-facto standard for transfer of Mac files. That being the case, I would like to have a filter which runs on unix to convert to/from Mac binary. Has anyone written such a beast? If not, can anyone provide me with the specs for translation to and from binhex format? Specifically the compression scheme and the crc calculation. It's a real pain to have to translate a file after downloading it, especially since macput will transfer the binary which is only about half as big. Since it seems the BinHex file format is catching on quickly as the mode for sharing macintosh binaries, several people have suggested that it would save time downloading them if they were converted back to binary first. In addition, converting on your typical un*x machine will go faster than on the mac. So, I've posted the sources for "xbin" to net.sources. It is designed to massage a .hex file into a form that macput can easily pass to MacTerminal. There are a few rough edges, but most of the code was borrowed freely from macput and macget, and (famous last words) it works on all the files I've tried. xbin.shar has also been sent to sumex-aim for arpa peaople.
