[net.micro.mac] Enhancements to Versaterm

derek@sask.UUCP (Derek Andrew) (01/02/85)

Recently, a version of Versaterm was posted to the net. This version
was a pre-release. It is now possible to obtain a commercial version
containing enhancements such as file up and down loading. Attached
is an announcement for this release.

The production version 1.10 of VersaTerm has many enhancements
over the Usenet version.

	o macput/macget file transfer capability

o Full VT100 numeric keypad support with Mac keypad

	o Improved VT100 emulation

o Very complete Tek 4014 emulation

o A selection can be made in the standard Macintosh way
over the whole text scroll region.

o Control sequences and no CR options available in the Commands Menu

	o The pre-released Bugs fixed.

o Plus many subtle things ....

Why am I posting this? Well it is because I believe that Versaterm is
the best terminal emulator that I have seen available for the Mac. I
would pick it over MacTerminal and TekAlike! I am not affiliated with
either the author or Peripherals Computers & Supplies Inc.

Here is a short blurb on Versaterm, posted with the author's permission.

VersaTerm is a text and graphics terminal emulator for the Macintosh
personal computer. VersaTerm emulates a DEC VT100, Tektronix
4014, and a Data General D200. Using a pull-down menu, the user
can quickly switch between any of the three emulations. At all
times, several pages of text and the graphics screen are kept
in memory. Each screen is updated such that it is returned to
its original state when an overlapping window is removed. VersaTerm
requires a 128K or 512K Macintosh, and optionally, an ImageWriter
printer and numeric keypad.

General Features
o File transfer capability fully compatible with MacTerminal's XMODEM protocol.
Operates with the public domain macput/macget programs. The
Icon information is transferred. Error free file transfers of
up to 9000 bits/second can be achieved.

o The incoming text stream can be logged directly to the printer. User
definable text widths of 80, 120, and 136 columns, and vertical form unit
control are selected via a dialogue box.

o Phone numbers are defined by a dialogue box, where the modem dialing
sequence and phone label are defined. The label is displayed in the
Phone menu. The user doesn't need to exit to the desktop or load in a
new file to select a new phone number. All auto-dial modems are supported.

o Terminal settings are saved and tagged to each phone number.
By simply selecting the phone label in the Phone menu, the settings
are automatically set when the number is dialed.

o Operates up to 2400 baud without flow control. Configurable to 19200
   baud with XON/XOFF flow control.

o User defined commands up
to 128 characters can be defined via a dialogue box and are displayed
in the Commands menu. By simply selecting a Commands menu item,
the command is sent to the host computer.

o Keyboard mapping is the same as MacTerminal.

DEC VT100 Features
o Full VT100 cursor movement, erase commands, inverse video, and line drawing
graphics are supported. VT102 character insert/delete commands
are supported. The optional numeric keypad fully emulates the
VT100 keypad. The LED's and double wide/high characters are
   not supported.

o A mouse selection can be copied to the clipboard, or printed, or
   pasted to the host computer.

o Clipboard can be viewed at any time.

o Editor cursor movement can be performed by the mouse. Both
VI and EMACS editors are directly supported.

Tektronix 4014 Features
o Compatible with Tektronix 4010, 4012 and 4014 graphics terminals.

o Four character sizes, easily changed from the Emulation menu.

o Mouse driven, full screen cross-hairs.

o Incremental plot and special point plot modes are supported.

o Graphics dump request from the host is supported.

o Text can be allowed to scroll vertically, as well as the standard
   two column format.

o Graphics can be dumped directly to the printer from the File menu.

Data General D200 Features
o Minimum implementation to support LTX testing software.

o Most all mouse related features of the VT100 are also supported in
   the D200 emulation.
