[net.misc] Lipstick Survey Results

moogoo (08/09/82)

At long last... the results of the "lipstick survey".
The original question asked if men were reluctant to mess up their
dates' lipstick [by kissing her] and therefore took lipstick as
a sign that their date would prefer to keep him at a distance.
Women were asked what their motives or reasons are for wearing lipstick.

With one exception the respondents felt that this was an unreasonable
attitude, especially when Madison Avenue brainwashes us into
the idea that lipstick is sexy and alluring. However, many men
avoided the question by declaring a that they would never date women
who wear lipstick or makeup. The survey pretty much degenerated
into an opinion poll about the merits of lipstick/makeup.
Without further ado here are the results:

Women (7 replies)

wear lipstick ...
	for chapped lips: 2
	for appearance : 4
	on whim : 2
	don't wear	: 1
(note that the categories are not mutually exclusive)

Men (15 replies)

	attracted by lipstick	: 3
	don't care : 4
	dislike lipstick	: 8
	dislike heavy makeup	: 6

And a few excerpts from the more colorful replies...
(F=female, M=male)

F: "Don't give up kissing. I'm sure your dates will agree.
Believe me, women have much more effective ways to detour advances."

M: "...I don't usually like [lipstick], unless someone is doing a hussy
number."

M: "I am male and would feel very self-conscious if I wore lipstick."

M: "..if [lipstick] is *RED* or (yuk) some other ungodly color
that the punkers now wear, I won't go near it. I certainly don't
want all that pasty s**t on *my* shirt."

M: "..they do carry lipstick with them, so give it a muss..."

M: "If she were wearing the lipstick on her ears ... I would certainly
take that as a sign that she would prefer to keep me at a distance. If
she wore it halfway between her bellybutton and her nose, with no
T-shirt, I might think she were trying to attract attention."

F: "A high gloss lipstick is worn in anticipation of smooching in a
dark corner - we don't want you to miss your mark!"

F: "....[lipstick] is just plain *gross*."
