[net.micro.mac] MacPascal problems

kim@analog.UUCP (Kim Helliwell ) (01/22/85)

I just noted a message by Allyn Saroyan in fa.info-mac commenting on my
earlier review of MacPascal. He states that the "memory problem" in
MacPascal (the lack of adequate memory to do anything really useful, that
is) does not go away when it is run on a 512K Mac. I had stated (and
believed) that a 512K Mac would let one write a 5000-10000 line program.

Well, I was wrong, and Allyn is right. When your listing gets up to
15-17% of memory (probably < 1000 lines), you start getting strange
errors--address errors which hit before the check phase is complete.

I am glad to be informed by Allyn that Apple is aware of the problem.
I have been trying to get a response from Apple for a week so far, and
haven't heard from them yet.

I should say I am not very happy with MacPascal, and if you haven't purchased
it yet, would recommend holding off until you evaluate your specific needs.
It is not a development system in any sense, even on a 512K Mac.

This is an official retraction of my original recommendation! CAVEAT EMPTOR!!
