From: Henry.Kautz I applaud Yves for making available and updating binhex. Version 4, however, is a little too fussy: earlier versions ignored everything in an upload file before the initial # in column 1, which was very handy, since you could run many articles through it right off the net through it. Version 4 complains (gives bad CRC error) when you try this. It is also very interesting that binhex4 has an advertisement as a startup dialogue box, rather than the usual appeal for money. This could be a great new way to fund "free" software -- sell advertising space! And no need to limit yourself to advertisements for software... I wouldn't mind having to watch a 10-second animated jingle for Cap'tn Crunch if it came with a free spreadsheet, or database! Also -- "extras" is a neat little d.a.... but it really should have close boxes!

There seems to be another obstacle in using Binhex 4.0 and that is that the program xbin will not convert files created by it. Has anyone else found this to be the case?

... has anybody recognized that xbin won't work with 4.0 binhex ... Yeah, I was just going to ask when the writers of 4.0 also provide the other necessary software (in this case atleast xbin). Juha Heinanen (jih@usl.uucp)

xbin will not convert files created by BinHex 4.0 because no one has told Dave Johnson (the person who wrote xbin) what the encoding scheme. I know that Dave was/is interested in knowing what this scheme is. (HINT HINT it should be posted or mailed to me and/or Dave) (I'm actually not positive Dave wrote xbin but I know he keeps it in line here) Scott Anderson brunix!browngr!sea
