[net.micro.mac] MacSMALLTALK

al@ames.UUCP (Al Globus) (02/27/85)

Does anyone have any info on SMALLTALK for the Mac? I heard there was
one at Stanford and another at Apple but no info on how to get them or
how good they are. Thanx in advance. I'll summarize for the net if the
responses are interesting.

Also, anyone have comments on the Mac version of LOGO?

I received this in response to my SMALLTALK request. Looks very good...

Organization: Macintosh Division, Apple Computer

I work in the group here that is responsible for Smalltalk (among other
things). Here is the status of it.

The Smalltalk people have a version of Smalltalk-80 running on a 1Mb
Lisa/Macintosh XL under MacWorks. This is the Version 1 image from Xerox,
which is somewhat earlier than the version described in the Smalltalk-80
books. They have fixed a number of significant performance bugs and the
performance is very reasonable.

They have added an interface to most of the Toolbox, which can be accessed
in Smalltalk. As I understand it, however, you cannot call things like the
event manager, because the Smalltalk and Toobox event handlers conflict
right now. You can call Quickdraw, the memory manager, and the file
system. (The Quickdraw graphics are 10 times faster than the Smalltalk
graphics.)

There will be a release of this system in the next couple of weeks. The
price will be under $100.

The ultimate plan is to rewrite most of Smalltalk user-interface to take
advantage of the Toolbox. This will make it faster and smaller (to the
point where it will fit on a 512K Macintosh). This version will be
available later in the year.

The new interface will be written using the Macintosh Generic Application
(the project I work on); this will allow developers to protoype
applications in Smalltalk and later convert them into compiled Object
Pascal for final development.

If you (or anyone else) wants to obtain this upcoming release of Smalltalk
or information about it or the Macintosh Generic Application, write to:
