[net.micro.mac] Moving system files around.

stuart@gargoyle.UChicago.UUCP (Stuart A. Kurtz) (03/14/85)

I've been having a rather strange difficulty with the Desk Accessory
Mover together with the freeware RamDisk. Because DAM often causes
the system to crash, destroying both the system and itself in the process,
I decide to be clever and go through the following process:

	1) Start the RamDisk (I've got a fat mac);
	2) Copy the System File I wanted to modify together with a copy
of the Finder to the RamDisk -- Start this finder.
	3) Copy DAM along with assorted DAM documents to RamDisk.
	4) Eject all non-RamDisks.
	5) Muck around with DAM until I get all the DA's sorted out.
(This is *much* faster than doing this off a physical disk,
especially if you decide to delete some DA's.)
	6) Exit DAM and copy the new version of the System file back
	   to my regular system file.

OK, so far everything works fine. I can even start the new finder
(command-option) dbl-click. Beautiful. Everything works just fine.

So, I eject my disk with its shiny new System file, reboot the Mac,
Stuff the disk back in, and the Mac spits it back out with the
flashing 'X' disk. (No sick Macs, thanks.)

If I start the Mac with another system disk, I can (command-option)
dbl-click the finder on the sick disk, and everything works just fine.
I've tried making the finder the startup application, and a few other
things, all to no avail.

Any ideas?
