In response to several questions mailed to me concerning the LaserWriter: 1) The current device can make use of BOTH the built-in fonts and those with which we have already been introduced. The difference is in the resolution (i.e. quality) of the characters formed. It is my understanding that eventually all of the fonts will have a corresponding equivalent available (read uploadable). 2) Currently from MacPaint when graphics and text coexist the text is treated as simple graphic imagery. Consequently, there is a marked lack of resolution in the characters. Personally, I did NOT find their quality offensive. If you want to have mixed text and graphics where both are excellent (read professional) in appearance then MacDraw is the answer. 3) When we opened the LaserWriter last week MacDraw was tucked inside. At the time I overlooked this fact. Later on in the week someone discovered it and we all began to play. This is an excellent alternative to MacPaint when near-typeset quality text is to accompany the graphics. 4) The MacDraw version being released is 1.00. It looks quite clean. Like all of the packages being released with the introduction of the LaserWriter there is an accompanying desk accessory called select printer. This allows the user to choose the printer device desired. I suspect that due to the large size of the driver(s) needed for the LaserWriter, only hard disk units will keep these and the ImageWriter drivers TOGETHER. 5) We have two or three Macs and MacXL's running on the AppleTalk lines. This makes it possible for any of our demonstration machines to have access to the LaserWriter. This is quite nice. Already two businesses in the area have purchased an 8 Mac/LaserWriter setup for their office environments. The "clincher" was the LaserWriter. This is proving to be an AWESOME entry into the business marketplace. 6) Lastly, now is the time to get your friends and neighbors to buy their Macs. The dealers are receiving some rebates on their sales through March 31st. The chances of getting a Mac and peripherals at or near dealer cost are quite high. dd :wq *** REPLACE THIS LINE WITH YOUR MESSAGE *** -- Eric Geoffrey Vann Analysts International (Chicago Branch) (312) 882-4673 ..!ihnp4!aicchi!egv

Oh dear, I feel rooked. I bought a LaserWriter this week (gulp--expensive) and I didn't get a MacDraw inside of it. I have used a 4-month-old beta test version that has some problems, but is still pretty neat. I have definitely been waiting for the real thing. Where did you/they find MacDraw inside the LW? -- Brian Reid decwrl!glacier!reid Stanford reid@SU-Glacier.ARPA
