[net.misc] mental worlds, time, rationality: gaw vs. EFT

bobr (08/13/82)

Oh my "God", Gaw's article (gaw at sri-unix) exhibits an extra-
ordinary though somewhat uncommon arrogance:

"..everybody should concentrate on finding truths that work
for the whole universe. The truth that I stated will work for
	 any rationally thinking creature.."

Well, Gaw is convieniently overlooking the fact that the definition of
"who is rational" is essentially a bootstrap operation:
People who think that they are rational DEFINE what rationality is,
thus also defining the class of rational people and the concept of
truth.

The fact that most of us have the same mental images most of the time
DOES NOT NECESSARILY IMPLY that reality has an existence independent
of our minds (which would relegate people who talk about mental worlds
to crackpot status, including Gaw him/herself).

(N.B. : if you want to be precise and nit-picky you should substitute
the phrase "same mental images" by "mental images leading to the same
actions".)
