From: Henry.Kautz Have you noticed that neither MacWrite nor Word handle line spacing correctly? Suppose you want to write a paper that is double spaced, and will involve various fonts, subscripts, etc. * In Macwrite, the "doubled" space between lines in based on the TALLEST character anywhere in the line. This means that if, for example, there is a subscripted character in the line, the following line is forced down lower, EVEN IF the subscript WAS NOT in the way of the following line, because you were double-spacing! This means that text containing subscripts and superscripts looks like hell, because the spacing between lines fluctuates. * WORD is actually worse! In AUTO mode, which handles different size fonts, and adjusts for subscripts, double-spacing is not possible! The only alternative is manually setting the line spacing at double or triple spacing. But that double or triple spacing is set, once and for all, for a 12-point font! So if you use different size fonts, again you can run into problems with the tops of characters being chopped off and overwritten! What should happen is that you set single or double or triple spacing, which is automatically adjusted for the current font size. Using super or subscripts (or multiple levels of these) increases the distance between lines ONLY IF there would otherwise be overwriting between lines. Come'on, somebody, lets get it right! ---- Henry Kautz :uucp: {seismo|allegra}!rochester!henry :arpa: henry@rochester :mail: Dept. of Comp. Sci., U. of Rochester, NY 14627 :phone: (716) 275-5766

This at least partially addresses your needs, but can truncate the tops of characters too tall to fit. -Brian Diehm Tektronix, Inc. (*** REPLACE THIS LINE WITH YOUR DISCLAIMER ***)
