[net.micro.mac] Wanted: heap tool

dba@cmu-cs-k.ARPA (David Anderson) (04/13/85)

I've been testing the beta test version of the Switcher (2.0), which by the
way, works infinitely better than the alpha test version (.92) that I saw
about a month ago. But it brings out a need that I've been feeling for some
time now, for a bit a software that allows the user to adjust the system and
application heap sizes at boot time.

Ideally, what I'd like is some code (an INIT resource, I suppose) that
checks to see if some weird key combination is held down at boot time, and
if so, brings up a box that lets the user set the system heap, application
heap, and ramdisk sizes. Perhaps different configurations could be bound to
different keys. Sometimes I'd like to be able to set up my fat mac as a
128K Mac plus 384K RamDisk, other times I'd like a 100K RamDisk with a just
a tiny system and finder in it, and a couple of applications sharing the
rest via Switcher, and still other times I'd like the configuration that I
now use (normal PD ramdisk).

I wanted to try writing this myself, but the current Megamax compiler (2.0)
doesn't seem to allow the creation of INIT resources. Does anyone know
better?
