A new book for younger readers by the popular (if a little weird) writer Daniel M. Pinkwater has recently appeared, "Jolly Roger: A Dog of Hoboken." It's not Pinkwater's best work, but has a number of entertaining and sardonic touches. A good gift for 6-10 year old readers, or adults who are Pinkwater fans. Notable is the following publication data: The pictures in this book were made using an Apple Macintosh computer, and the MacPaint program. The author drew the pictures with a "mouse," which is a little rolling box connected to the computer by a wire. The pictures appeared on the computer screen in the form of little dots called "pixels." When each picture was finished, it was printed on a dot matrix printer (the sort of printer used with most computers). Pinkwater often supplies his own pictures, and the pictures in this book show his style strongly. It's nice to see him picking up a new kind of brush for his art. A self-portrait of the artist accompanies this information on the back of the dust jacket. Oh. $10.25, Lothrop Lee and Shephard Books.
