I've been trying to use Red Ryder 5.0, which was posted to the net a week or so ago, to do transfers using kermit to our Vax running 4.2 bsd. I'm running the Columbia kermit for 4.2 which was posted to the net a while back. These files are just ordinary text files; the only reason to use kermit rather than ASCII transfers is the error checking. The problem is that kermit on the Vax translates newline to CRLF. Red Ryder just goes ahead and puts CRLF into the file on the Mac, but MacWrite and Edit are only looking for CR as the end of line marker. So I get unprintable characters at the beginning of each line following the first. If I send a file the other way without the LF's, I get one long line in a file on the Vax. The unsightly LF's have to be there in order to get a file transfer from Mac to Vax to work right. MacKermit, on the other hand, has a MacWrite mode which transfers text files correctly. Does anyone know how to get Red Ryder to be reasonable about this? Red Ryder now has two strikes against it (it's not a good terminal, and I can't transfer files with it). If host mode doesn't work, I'll just trash it. On another topic, I'm traveling to Copenhagen for two weeks next month, and I tenatively plan to take my Mac along. Is this a good idea? Will I have any problems with customs? Will I have any trouble getting a converter to convert Danish electricity into something the Mac can swallow? If these questions sound stupid, please be tolerant, it's my first trip abroad. -- Paul Schinder Astronomy and Astrophysics Center University of Chicago uucp: ..!ihnp4!oddjob!paul
