[net.micro.mac] Ultima ]I[ for the Macintosh

brian@ut-sally.UUCP (Brian H. Powell) (05/25/85)

In the following passage, replace all occurrences
of "Ultima" with "Ultima (tm)".

I thought I'd mention that Ultima ]I[ for the Macintosh will soon be
released by Origin Systems. (Early June, and that's definite.)

I haven't seen it, but from descriptions, it promises to be one of the
premiere applications for the Mac. It's not just "another game for the Mac."
It has lots of modeless dialog boxes and a finder-like interface for
player-creation. These features, though extolled in the user interface
guidelines in Inside Macintosh, are rarely found in Macintosh applications.

Do not confuse this game with the recently released Ultima ][ for the
Mac. Ultima ][, by Sierra On-Line, *is* just "another game for the Mac."
(sigh) It has a weak user interface, but what really gets me is that they
massacred the game. It's not the original Ultima ][ we saw for the
Apple ][. This one changed the rules of moving, the strings used for
messages, and perhaps other things. This is no translation; it's a loose
interpretation. And it's not worth buying.

Disclaimer:
The opinions expressed herein are not the opinions of:
Origin Systems (though they probably concur),
Sierra On-Line (definitely won't concur),
or my employer, The University of Texas at Austin (who couldn't care less).
