[net.micro.mac] keyboard remapping?

jdb@mordor.UUCP (John Bruner) (05/30/85)

Now that the warranty is about to expire on my new Mac, I'm ready
to convert its SHIFT LOCK key (useless to me) into a CONTROL key.
However, so far I haven't been able to track down any specifics on
how to change the keyboard map that the Mac uses to translate key
codes into ASCII. The IM "phone book" only says that the pertinent
information will be included in the "real" IM, due out later this
year.

I've seen the keyboard remapping programs that were posted here,
but I'm more interested in the internal mechanism, since I want to
change the internal interpretation of the SHIFT LOCK modifier bit.

Before I start the laborious process of resource disassembly, has
anyone done this already? (Also, I'd welcome any comments about
breaking the latching mechanism on the SHIFT LOCK key.)

Please reply by mail, and I'll summarize to the net.
