If the list price of the Mac is still $2200, I'd guess that's
about 4 to 5 times the manufacturing cost.  I doubt they spend
over $500 to build one.

Spend some time studying any reasonable manufacturing/customer support
organization, look into the cost of advertising today and then price a few
high paid engineers (the kind you need to do a really good job). The 4
to 5 times markup becomes the only way you can stay in business (to say
nothing of making a profit).
