I'm trying to get Microsoft's Multiplan to read an ascii text file generated by Helix. The file consists of records separated by carriage returns. Records consist of fields separated by tabs. I chose the file and Multiplan then picked Open from the File menu. Multiplan complained that the SYLK id record was missing, then gave me an empty work sheet. If you can give me any assistance, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanx in advance.

multiplan is expecting a SYLK file (Symbolic Link) to have as its first record, an ID record containing the following fields: ;Pname = a string containging the name of the application which produced the document. ;N = indictates origin and devince of the file and conatins a flag for cell protection. for more info see page 160 of the Multiplan manual. If it says their is not an ID record, its possible that helix wrote the file in the wrong format. If your file is not too big, you may be able to transfer it just using the clipboard. - S R at the U of R
