From: Henry.Kautz >an additional posting if it was a malicious act. Since we have not yet >caught the individual responsible Reed is withdrawing outgoing news from >the net until this issue is resolved. We will continue receiving and >forwarding all news. We will also continue our mail feeds. I'm glad that Reed is concerned about this, but isn't cutting off everyone at Reed from the net a bit extreme, and almost certainly ineffective? It seems very unlikely that you could ever catch someone after a single incident, and certainly could not get evidence to convict somebody beyond a reasonable doubt. So if you really think the creep is a menace, and want to catch him, you have to give him enough rope to hang himself with, and stay connected to the net! On the other hand, suppose the culprit did this as a one-time-only prank. Then there is certainly no reason to disconnect mail to the net! Hmmmmm... the ONLY logical rational for disconnecting would be if somebody was repeatedly sending out lots of material with legal/national security consequences, and just couldn't be detected... but this doesn't seem to be the case... ---- Henry Kautz :uucp: {seismo|allegra}!rochester!henry :arpa: henry@rochester :mail: Dept. of Comp.
